As some of you know, I was one of the featured artists for this year’s Surface Design Association’s Conference in San Antonio.

I arrived in San Antonio a day early, so that I could visit Gallery Nord where my work was to hang and make sure everything was going according to plan.

When I get there Nathalie Miebach was busy on the lower level putting her amazing work together. When I see work like Nathalie’s I get very excited–her brain works in creative and mysterious ways AND she shares that with us. Her work focuses on translating weather patterns into baskets. If this intrigues you, and it should, check out her TED talk.The Gallery owner and assistants were busy hanging Eun-Kyung Suh’s Untold Stories about Korean immigrants and their traditions. On the other side of the gallery, Kathryn Clark’s Foreclosure Quilts would be hung.

I was showed the space where my work was to hang and left to work by myself to put the finishing touches on my quilts–much easier work than what was being done downstairs!

I had sent ten pieces with the understanding that only eight or nine would be hung. My job was to prep the pieces for hanging and then let Gallery Nord owner Carina Gors select her favorites.

This is the first time I have been a featured artist, and I must say it’s exciting to see these white walls and know that soon they will be covered with my quilts.

Next stop Jane Dunnewold’s new studio, the Witte, and the McNay. After that the Gallery Nord Show opens.
