Image Journal #26

It’s curious how time gets away when you are living off the grid. Simple chores in the city become day long activities in the woods. Its been a full two weeks since my last post.

Shame on me.

Moving forward.

Jonny Gray was the Wrangell Mountains Center’s second Artist in Residence. Jonny is a performance artist and professor of environmental rhetoric. He found our community’s reaction to having a reality T.V. in our little town fascinating. Yes, the film crew is still here taping Edge of Alaska which is scheduled to air on the Discovery Channel this fall. Here’s Jonny interacting with the camera man for the show. Maria Shell Image Journal #26And here is me photographing locals taping Jonny being taped by the camera man. Maria Shell Image Journal #26Where does it all end? Most likely with t-shirt for sale at Costco featuring Jason’s pigs and goats. Remember? They like to graze (and poop) in our yard. Maria Shell Image Journal #26Sew Fun was AMAZING. Maria Shell Image Journal #26Lots of busy stitchers making things with sewing machines. Maria Shell Image Journal #26Can you spot our very famous guest artist? You can find the answer to the question here. We were very fortunate to have several private tutorials and a lecture. Maria Shell Image Journal #26While I helped stitchers sew, there were some antics across the street at the cabin. Maria Shell Image Journal #26It is still pretty dang light around here. This photo was taken at two in morning. Maria Shell Image Journal #26The cottonwood has been snowing for more than a week. Maria Shell Image Journal #26Token finds this substance well worth investigating; the rest of us are moderately annoyed by its presence. Maria Shell Image Journal #26July 4th was a fine spectacle. Locals and visitors came from up the road and Europe to fill the streets–we waited patiently for the parade to begin.

Maria Shell Image Journal #26There were trombone players in tutus and drummers with rainbow hair.

Maria Shell Image Journal #26Maria Shell Image Journal #26Salmon swimming upstream and lounging on trucks. Maria Shell Image Journal #26Maria Shell Image Journal #26Men in spandex and duct tape. Maria Shell Image Journal #26Maria Shell Image Journal #26Maria Shell Image Journal #26French Fries and Hamburgers. Maria Shell Image Journal #26Maria Shell Image Journal #26A big headed mountain man.

Maria Shell Image Journal #26A tiny bear with a mosquito net bonnet.

Maria Shell Image Journal #26And a camera head recording it all.

Maria Shell Image Journal #26There was the usual unusual assortment of races and challenges. Cherry pit spitting. Maria Shell Image Journal #26A three legged race,Maria Shell Image Journal #26and the legendary egg toss. Here is the first round of the finals. Maria Shell Image Journal #26By the last round the tossers where several buildings apart. Maria Shell Image Journal #26Maria Shell Image Journal #26Between events we chilled on the porch. Maria Shell Image Journal #26And went swimming. Maria Shell Image Journal #26The final event of this long, hot (80 degrees!), wonderfully sunny 4th was music by the Mixed Meters at the bar. Maria Shell Image Journal #26I hope you all had an amazing July 4th.

Now its back to the studio.

Time to get in there and make some art.

But first, I’ve gotta haul water and do some dishes…
