Image Journal #28

Have you ever run into a dear friend who you have lost touch with? Most of the time, I just jump right back into the friendship. If we connected five years ago, most likely that connection still exists inside of us. Still, there are those awkward moments when you don’t know what to say. Too much time has lapsed–you have become different people.

I know it has only been two weeks, but I am feeling a bit shy about my lack of posts. Are we still friends? I hope so.

Lots of goodness in the last two weeks.

Wine, friends, and a view. It really doesn’t get much better than that. We are up in Kennicott, Alaska on the deck of the Kennicott Glacier Lodge. Maria Shell Image Journal #28It has been the summer of the wasp nest. Tripp and Ozzy have taken great pride in eliminating them from the neighborhood. I wanted to keep this one. Maria Shell Image Journal #28But Tripp wanted to see what was inside. Maria Shell Image Journal #28Jason Lobo’s pigs came for a studio visit. Now that they are reality TV stars, they think they can drop by WHENEVER. Maria Shell Image Journal #28We drove back from McCarthy and on to Hope, Alaska for a wedding. Everyone should get married in HOPE, don’t you think? It was a beautiful thing.

Walt and I attended the opening of my friend Carmel Anderson’s show at the Blue Holloman Gallery. If you have’t visited the Blue Holloman you should. It is the best gallery in town.

I finally finished a quilt top. But, like nine of ten art quilters in the world right now, I can’t show you what it looks like. I will say, that even for me, it has involved a lot of cut, stitch, and press. Maria Shell Image Journal #28I also finished a new summer blouse based on the Staple Dress pattern by April Rhodes. Maria Shell Image Journal #28 I tried a no smile approach to modeling and that didn’t really work out for me. But the shirt is great. Maria Shell Image Journal #28We watched a fantastic documentary about Diana Vreeland. Maria Shell Image Journal #28Vreeland kind of single handedly created what we know as fashion. Maria Shell Image Journal #28The movie is called Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel. It is a great look at history, fashion, and an amazing woman. Maria Shell Image Journal #28I am back to electricity and my long arm quilting machine. I turn on the tap and water runs out of it. It is good to miss these things, and it is good to be back. I’m ready to write some blogs! Is there anything in particular you’d like to talk about?

  2. Hey Maria – is that Dorothy Caldwell at your table? She is an Ontario legend and sure is getting around this summer if it is…. will be watching for your Quilt National Entry at Opening next May!!
    Bethany in Kingston, ON

  3. Bethany- I WISH I were having wine with Dorothy Caldwell. Wouldn’t that be something? Some friends actually thought it was me on her home page. I am doubtful about Quilt National, but if you don’t play how do you win? So I am pushing myself right now to make big new work. I know when its all over I will have some new pieces I will love, and that’s a good end result in of itself.

  4. Good to have you back, Maria! I love the new blouse — gorgeous!
