Work of Words #1

Since I’ve been in Charlotte, I’ve been obsessing on signage. It’s been a very long time since I have lived in such an urban environment–signs are everywhere.

From the beginning of my residency at the McColl Center for Art + Innovation, I had this idea that I might be able to collect words from signs and use them to write pithy phrases.

It’s kind of hard! I’ve been collecting the words, but my vocabulary is still quite limited–like a child’s. So far, I have managed to photograph and then crop these words.

Work of Words #1 by Maria ShellHere we go. My very first completed Work of Words.

Very nice Maria! Did you put these in your studio? How did you use them? I still plan to visit. How much longer are you in Charlotte?

    • Lennie- It was great to meet you in Charlotte. I truly enjoyed my stay…so much that I am hoping that I get to come back in the May for the unveiling of Moore Place Community Quilt.

  2. I love this! Isn’t it funny how we get obsessed by things like this? By the way, my daughter lives in Charlotte.

  3. Sublime! Now how do you work that into a quilt?
