Teaching Schedule for the International Quilt Festival Houston 2015

In some ways, I can’t believe I am actually saying this, but I am for REAL teaching at this year’s International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas. Can you believe it?

Here is the cover of the completely overwhelming list of things happening during this annual mega quilting event. The International Quilt Festival is the LARGEST convention held ever year in Houston.

IQA Cover 2015And here is page one listing the table of contents. Look closely and you will see a detail shot of my quilt Dance Party at Tamara’s House.

Building Community Through Quilts
Last year, I spent two months in residency at the McColl Center for Art + Innovation.

Maria Shell Studio CharlotteWhile there I worked with the tenants of Moore Place, a permanent housing facility for the formerly chronically homeless.

HOME by Maria ShellWe worked on stitching pillow cases, quilt blocks, and community.

This lecture is the story of that journey as well as great tips for building your own community quilts.

The Art of the Word
Are you ready to fund your quilt career through writing grants and proposals? Let’s do it. I can help you. This is a longer, hands-on, version of the keynote speech I gave at Fiberlandia the SAQA annual conference held in Portland this past year. We will work our way through the all steps you need to take to begin funding your quilting career.

Time Tracking for Artists
One of the most difficult things about being a working artist is getting it all done. We juggle professional obligations, family commitments, studio time, and nervous breakdowns (just kidding, well kind of, shit like that does happen), and studio time. Learning what “Time Tracking” is and how to do it allows us to be more productive in the studio, create business opportunities, and maintain healthy relationships with our family, friends, and peers.

Blogging for Beginners (All Day)
In December 2012, I wanted to document my renewed interested in making clothes, so I started a blog to document that process. Almost three years later, I consider my blog an essential part of my artistic practice. Writing a heartful, true-to-you blog can be one of the best things you can do to advance your artist career and satisfy your life’s purpose. Alright that sounds a bit hokey, but I wouldn’t say it if it weren’t true.

This all day workshop covers all aspects of beginning and maintaining a blog. Technical issues will be covered, but the REAL discussion will be about creating a visual and written expression of you and your work on the internet.

Speaking of technical issues. I really want to post a screen shot of my blog. I can capture it with GRAB, but WordPress won’t let me up load the file. Does anyone know how to use GRAB and change the image to a form that WordPress will take?

You can sign up for these classes by going to the International Quilt Festivals Website. (Last year’s display of Red and White quilts was amazing.)

IQA 40th Anniversary If you have questions, send me an email via my contact page or post it here in the comment section.

Can’t come to Houston? Well, I’d love to come to you. Then we could have cocktails together instead of me sitting alone at the Mexican restaurant in Houston.

Maria Shell Festival on FridayOn my website, you can find all the art quilting classes I teach. I hope you will check it.

  1. Wow! You’re an Alaskan ambassador. How cool! I hope you become even more famous.

  2. Hi Maria. I signed up for your community quilts lecturing. Bringing my quilt buddy. See you there!

  3. You’ve got a busy schedule of classes! Good for you. I’m not a quilter, but I would like to take a couple of those.

    • Sherri- A couple of years ago, IQA started offering professional development classes, and that (for the most part) is what I am teaching. They really could be useful to almost any artist who wants to learn how to share her work and expertise. Of course, I think you know a LOT already.

I would love to take classes from you someday. Do your grab and save it to your desktop. Then change or add jpg at the end of the name. It will ask do you want to change from .tiff to .jpg and you say yes. That’s how I do it anyway.

YAY!!! does this mean you’ll need my gorgeous quilt this winter?? 🙂 sent with love

    • I don’t know yet Tamara. I hope so! Remember this summer when you weren’t butchering the pig, I showed you that they used that photo just to promote my classes. Its pretty cool I think.

Congrats on your Houston gig. I know it will be fun and that you will learn as much as you teach and your students will love you as do the rest of us for your generosity.

  7. Wow, that is quite the ambitious schedule. I’m sure many lucky folks will benefit from your teaching!

  8. I’m signed up for your lecture. And somehow I found out about your workshop in the south bay, and I think I’ll get into that as well! Looking forward to meeting you in person!

  9. Wow, that is a full schedule! I hope you have a fabulous time. I am somewhat jealous.

Grab is probably saving the screenshot in PNG format. Forgive me if I’m being pedantic and this is not your problem. You can easily change it in Preview. :

    1) opening up the screenshot in Preview
    2) open File menu and choose Export…
    3) change format from PNG to JPG. You can change the name, and it’ll let you change the quality here too if you want.
    4) save
    5) now try the upload with the new .jpg file.

  10. I’ll be happy to have cocktails with you at a Mexican restaurant, and you won’t have to drink along. See you in Houston!!!!
