Creative Quilt Challenges by Pat Pease and Wendy Hill

No, this is not a quilt book review site. Yes, my last post was about the the fabulous blogger and art quilter Kathy Loomis’s new book, and yes today’s blog is about Wendy Hill and Pat Pease’s new book Creative Quilt Challenges published by C&T Publishing.

I did not plan it this way. It just happened. There were supposed to be a half a dozen other ideas discussed between now and then, but it didn’t happen.

I think I will take the top ten approach again.

  1. Challenges are fun and it is a really cool idea to write a book about them.
  2. Wendy and Pat are fabulous duo.22524a
  3. The quilts in this book are fabulous. The quilter’s eye candy here is top notch.
  4. This is a book about the journey which is always better than the destination. Pat and Wendy share their stories which is inspiring.
  5. Amazon customer review for this book is a FIVE big stars, and that is a good sign.
  6. The first challenge is my favorite—Reimagine and Old Block—I am always in favor of that. Here is one of Pat’s reimagined quilts using the log cabin quilt block. Bright_Hopes_FVAnd here is what Wendy thought about the block. Pretty cool eh?
    Stepping Out
  7. They don’t just finish the tops—they also talk about the quilting.
  8. The book is filled with handy tips about how to do things as well as good suggestions about quilting tools and notions.
  9. Wendy and I are email pen pals. So, it is super fun to be a part of her successful book in this way.
  10. I think the format of this book is contemporary and reader friendly. Check out the chapter page. It makes you want to read on.

Chapter Page of BookAnd there are two more good things to share.

First of all, if you want to know more about the book and meet some new bloggers you can follow along here. For ten days bloggers will be talking about what they like about the book.

Post Script-
I used this random number generator to select the winner. The first time I got the number 80 which was too high. The second time I got the number 49. The 49th comment was made by Denneen who is the lucky winner! Thank you all for commenting. This was fun, and I think I will do it again. Look for a review of Nysha Nelson’s free motion quilting DVD this month. I will be giving away a copy to one lucky winner!

I saw the exhibit of their quilts at PIQF and was smitten. So when I saw that they had published a book with some of those quilts, I ordered it immediately! Now I just have to take the time to sit down and read it! Your post is encouraging me to do just that!

    • I challenged myself this year–to make at least twelve log cabin quilt variations. I am just finishing number three. And I am very inspired by the ones in the book. please pick me!!

  2. ooooh, I’d love to see that book. Do pick me!

I love contemporary quilts. I’d love to have the inspiration and knowledge shared by these two talented ladies.

Hi Maria, I’ve been following your blog for quite some time because I just LOVE your work. I make folk art quilts and am planning on making a new bed quilt for my new bed, but I don’t really know how to make blankets. I think this book would be the perfect inspiration. Thanks so much for this opportunity!

  5. I love the tale of a journey! What I like best is your # 7 point – the quilting~!~..I am trying to “FINISH” my own quilts and CRINGE when I read “Quilt as Desired”….what does that really mean? When you are a beginner, it is nice to read about how the pattern designer thought about the quilting and how to best enhance the blocks or overall quilt with the QUILTING !

  6. I love a challenge! It brings out the creative side of me! Makes me think harder and look more closely at what I am doing! This book sounds like great inspirations! I would love it to turn up my creative perspiration!

All your points are good ones… But number 4 resonates with me. Because it includes it the journey not the destination! (Yes I am a treckie) I am embarking on a new journey (or at least an extension of the old one) leaving the security of my part time job and devoting myself to becoming a better artist, and taking care of my health. I love books that included the insights of the authors. Great post for your first blog hop!

I love a challenge, and the idea of re-imagining a quilt block is fabulous! Thanks for the chance to win a copy of this book.

Hi Maria! I have been “in my box” for a very long time…just ask my quilty friends…but these projects look so cool maybe I’m okay with breaking out…a little bit. Pick me! And, you did just fine in your book review! 😉

  11. My New Years resolution was to utilize my stash. I have made 3 scrap quilts so far. Thank you for the inspiration.

  12. The idea of “challenges” as demonstration of their topic excites me. Particularly, when I see the pages you chose to share. Thank you, Maria!

Eye Candy – can anyone have too much?!!

This looks like a fabulous book! it’s always good to look at things a different way!

You got me, Maria. I’m hooked. The table of contents did it for me.

  16. My favorite thing about books that focus on the creative process rather than the end product is that the information can be applied to any medium. I’d love to have a copy of this book to add to my creative inspiration library. Thanks for sharing, Maria.

Thank you for giving us a chance to win this book. It looks like it would expand any quilter’s bag of tricks to make a fabulous quilt.

  18. This book looks fantastic! That first challenge got me hooked. And I like that they talk about the quilting too. I would love to win it. Thanks for the opportunity!

  19. Love reading bout the journey. The creative process is always of interest to me! Would love a chance to read this book.

  20. Hi. I would love to use this book with my quilt guild!

  21. That table of contents inspires me too. I have started following challenges this year, and I think it really helps you stretch your creativity and find your voice.

  22. Sheila on said:

I would feel very lucky to win! I’m poised to dive in and explore.

  23. Lisa Marie on said:

I love books that have gorgeous original quilts in them! And learning how to use their process to make my own would be even better!

  24. Being the only art quilter in my traditional quilt guild, I look for challenges elsewhere, and this book appears to be a great resource for that! The table of contents shows a number of things that interest me: improvisation, free-form cutting, deconstruction, etc.

  25. This book would be a great addition to any quilters’ library, I like how they discuss the quilting, too often the words “quilt as desired” are tacked on to the end of the instructions and it isn’t really helpful to read that.

  26. I’m always up for a good challenge. Would love to win a copy!

  27. Colleen on said:

Eye Candy! I would like to win this book for inspiration. Our local quild is full of people up for a challenge!

  28. Karen Friedrichs on said:

I would love to win because the cover draws me in.

  29. Chris on said:

It looks like a left brain-right brain rethink book. Sometimes it’s good to shake up my old brain with new ideas on an old theme like a log cabin. Would love to stop and rethink it.

  30. I don’t know that I want the book so much as need it! I am probably the world’s most traditional quilter . . . the book would help me mix things up a little!

  31. Looks like an interesting approach. I’m always inspired reading the creative approaches of others!

  32. I enjoyed this post, you have a lovely blog, and I agree Pat and Wendy are a fabulous duo!

I’m tired of the same old same old. I love to put fresh eyes on a quilt.

  36. sewserena on said:

Because I’ve never seen a quilt book or owned one that was about a challenge! I’m intrigued!

  37. Challenges always spur my creative juices, so what better than a book narrating quilters’ experiences with them except the photos of the results?

  38. Christine on said:

This looks like an awesome and ‘inspiring’ book!

  39. Julie Hallquist on said:

I love challenges, and doing one without speaking seems like the ultimate! Also like having the quilting addressed, so I’d love a copy of this book.

As a new quilter, I’m so grateful for ideas and inspirations. This looks like just one if the best for that! Many thanks for your generous offer

  42. The book looks very inspiring! Love the log cabin variation.

  43. Cathy on said:

I’m returning to quilting and sewing as part of my retirement. While I find I’ve retained the skills and basic approaches I relied on all those years ago when I had time to sew, what I’ve lost is the adventurous spirit that relied on my belief that I could do just about anything with fabric. Now I find myself following patterns -something I seldom did in my past. This book could very well be the jumping off point for me to jump off in my quilting!

  44. mmcgloth2 on said:

I always love a challenge and making a quilt using this book as a guide would certainly be one.

  45. Joan Spencer on said:

As a fiber arts designer, I am always in need of methods of coming up with designs and having a book that concentrates on that is a real plus. Thank you for reviewing it.

  46. JoAnne on said:

This book sounds like it would be so much fun to use! Thanks for posting the table of contents, it really shows the variety of ideas in the book.

  47. Gaye Oldham on said:

What a beautiful breath of fresh air this book is. I love the concepts described. I have belonged to a quilting group for 10 years or more called, aptly enough, “Limited Editions”. We work on “challenges” to keep the creative juices flowing and this book I am sure would bring much needed new ideas and impetus to this group of very talented ladies. This book is what I have dreamed of but could never find, so if you want to send a copy way down to Tasmania in Australia…it would be soooo appreciated. Love it!

  48. Karen Falvey on said:

would love this book. Have a friend and a couple of small groups this would be so fun to share. You got a bit creative with your calendar. Monday is either the 3rd the 4th or the 7th according to this blog post..

  49. Denneen on said:

My husband and I would like to collaborate on a project where one of us doesn’t feel like our style gets shut down. My friend and I would like to do that, too. We have such different styles. It could be very interesting. I saw some of their quilts and love them!

    • Denneen–You are the lucky winner of the book! Congratulations. I will be contacting for a mailing address or you can send it to me via my contact page. Thank you for stopping by and commenting.

  50. ooh, that is some nice eye candy, indeed. I like their color choices very much.
I do like journey books much more than product. I like to go my own way, but too often I seem to get lost or blow a tire somewhere (how’s that for tortured metaphor!)

I figure when your blog goes quiet is when you are spending all your waking hours (and then some) finishing quilting and putting binding sleeves on things. It’s good to see your post.

    • Carrie-

I love your tortured metaphor! I wish I were spending every hour in the studio, but right now I am spending every hour traveling! That is fun too. I am in Delaware now and headed to Florida tomorrow! Thank you for stopping by!
