No, this is not a quilt book review site. Yes, my last post was about the the fabulous blogger and art quilter Kathy Loomis’s new book, and yes today’s blog is about Wendy Hill and Pat Pease’s new book Creative Quilt Challenges published by C&T Publishing.
I did not plan it this way. It just happened. There were supposed to be a half a dozen other ideas discussed between now and then, but it didn’t happen.
I think I will take the top ten approach again.
- Challenges are fun and it is a really cool idea to write a book about them.
- Wendy and Pat are fabulous duo.
- The quilts in this book are fabulous. The quilter’s eye candy here is top notch.
- This is a book about the journey which is always better than the destination. Pat and Wendy share their stories which is inspiring.
- Amazon customer review for this book is a FIVE big stars, and that is a good sign.
- The first challenge is my favorite—Reimagine and Old Block—I am always in favor of that. Here is one of Pat’s reimagined quilts using the log cabin quilt block. And here is what Wendy thought about the block. Pretty cool eh?
- They don’t just finish the tops—they also talk about the quilting.
- The book is filled with handy tips about how to do things as well as good suggestions about quilting tools and notions.
- Wendy and I are email pen pals. So, it is super fun to be a part of her successful book in this way.
- I think the format of this book is contemporary and reader friendly. Check out the chapter page. It makes you want to read on.

I saw the exhibit of their quilts at PIQF and was smitten. So when I saw that they had published a book with some of those quilts, I ordered it immediately! Now I just have to take the time to sit down and read it! Your post is encouraging me to do just that!

I love the tale of a journey! What I like best is your # 7 point – the quilting~!~..I am trying to “FINISH” my own quilts and CRINGE when I read “Quilt as Desired”….what does that really mean? When you are a beginner, it is nice to read about how the pattern designer thought about the quilting and how to best enhance the blocks or overall quilt with the QUILTING !
I love a challenge! It brings out the creative side of me! Makes me think harder and look more closely at what I am doing! This book sounds like great inspirations! I would love it to turn up my creative perspiration!
All your points are good ones… But number 4 resonates with me. Because it includes it the journey not the destination! (Yes I am a treckie) I am embarking on a new journey (or at least an extension of the old one) leaving the security of my part time job and devoting myself to becoming a better artist, and taking care of my health. I love books that have gorgeous original quilts in them! And learning how to use their process to make my own would be even better!
Being the only art quilter in my traditional quilt guild, I look for challenges elsewhere, and this book appears to be a great resource for that! The table of contents shows a number of things that interest me: improvisation, free-form cutting, deconstruction, etc.
This book would be a great addition to any quilters’ library, I like how they discuss the quilting, too often the words “quilt as desired” are tacked on to the end of the instructions and it isn’t really helpful to read that.
I’m always up for a good challenge. Would love to win a copy!

Because I’ve never seen a quilt book or owned one that was about a challenge! I’m intrigued!
Challenges always spur my creative juices, so what better than a book narrating quilters’ experiences with them except the photos of the results?

I’m returning to quilting and sewing as part of my retirement. While I find I’ve retained the skills and basic approaches I relied on all those years ago when I had time to sew, what I’ve lost is the adventurous spirit that relied on my belief that I could do just about anything with fabric. Now I find myself following patterns -something I seldom did in my past. This book could very well be the jumping off point for me to jump off in my quilting!
I always love a challenge and making a quilt using this book as a guide would certainly be one.

What a beautiful breath of fresh air this book is. I love the concepts described. I have belonged to a quilting group for 10 years or more called, aptly enough, “Limited Editions”. We work on “challenges” to keep the creative juices flowing and this book I am sure would bring much needed new ideas and impetus to this group of very talented ladies. This book is what I have dreamed of but could never find, so if you want to send a copy way down to Tasmania in Australia…it would be soooo appreciated. Love it!

I do like journey books much more than product. I like to go my own way, but too often I seem to get lost or blow a tire somewhere (how’s that for tortured metaphor!)
I figure when your blog goes quiet is when you are spending all your waking hours (and then some) finishing quilting and putting binding sleeves on things. It’s good to see your post.
