Images, Ideas, and Updates May 2016

So, we are headed towards July. Which means I should probably write my May 2016 Update. I can remember back in the day when I successfully wrote a weekly update called Image Journal. It was a good idea, but like Project Every Day it was REALLY hard to maintain.

May started with another BIG adventure. I boarded a plane and headed towards Pittsburgh, PA for the opening of Fiberart International 2016.

Maria Shell IIU June 2016 PlaneIt was an excellent journey. Because I was not lecturing, or teaching, or really doing much beyond being an artist at an event, I challenged myself to do some Gonzo journalism.

hunter-s-thompson-liebowitzI documented each day of the event mostly in my hotel room at night. I hope you will enjoy them. And here are some images to entice you.

And then I flew back to Anchorage in time for graduation season. Son number graduated from High School! He will be attending Southern Oregon University in the fall majoring in theatre and pre-law. We get lots of comments about that double major. The fact is, if you think about it, there is a LOT of crossover between those two careers.  We are just happy he has a plan, and we can afford to help him make it a reality.

Son number two had a great season of band concerts. He was the percussionist for the Hansew Middle School Jazz Band. His teacher was a true gift for us this year. We couldn’t have done it without you Frau!

I once again experienced the pain of trying to keep up with this Project Every Day experiment.

If you want to know more about Project Every Day, you can read this introductory post I wrote here. You can also follow along on Instagram where I try and post daily. I am also doing weekly documentation of the project on my website. Basically, if you are interested in making any of the garments, this is the place where I will be listing the pattern, fabric, etc…

I know from past months that if I get behind, do not procrastinate. GET CAUGHT UP.  I am staying with it. Sometimes though, the only reason I am staying with it is because I am stubborn, and I said I would. It is very hard, even for me, to see what this is all about. But I wanted to do it. So I am.

These photos are taken in the same place. First, at the beginning of May.

thumb_IMG_5127_1024And finally at the end of the month. May is a dramatic growth season for sure. Most gardeners would tell you that planting season was almost a full month ahead of schedule this year. 20 years ago, planting weekend was Memorial Weekend. Now days, the plants are in full bloom by then.

Maria Shell PED Day #136I finished and mailed my SAQA Auction Quilt.

thumb_IMG_5328_1024Check out all beautiful artwork here. I have written a couple of posts about my own personal SAQA Auction Quilt Collection. You can read about them here and here

I started hiking again with the Happy Hikers . I hope to share more about that in a future blog post, but for now let’s just say that Anchorage has an amazing trail system, and I am super lucky to live right next door to it.

May is moose season. We had a momma and her baby claim our yard again this year.  That was until a bear came snooping around.  They did the skedaddle, but we don’t know if they made it. I hate thinking about it. I know it is nature, but they were our neighbors.

I made a half dozen fleece flannel baby blankets.  You can learn how to make them here. This is probably my most popular blog post ever.  They are easy to make and very much cherish by those who receive them.

thumb_IMG_6708_1024On the last day of the month, son #2 and #3 plus friend got in the car with me and drove to McCarthy, Alaska.

I adore your SAQA Auction Quilt. Congratulations to Son #1 on graduation – I thought all trial attorneys majored in theater.

  2. Yes. That is what I think too! Thinking on your feet, connecting with an audience, being clever are all part of being a lawyer and a comedian! Thank you for the positive feedback on my auction quilt. It is one of my favorites too.

good on you for doing a quality quilt for the SAQA auction, many peoples’ contribution look very minimal compared to their usual

      • Kathy- I think of the auction as an opportunity to share my work with a larger audience, so I try my best to send something good!

  3. Love your auction piece! My sister has a bachelor degree in Drama and a Law degree. It worked for her! Best of luck to your son!

  4. Wow, another busy month for you! Congratulations on your son’s graduation, your SAQA auction quilt is wonderful and I agree that Anchorage has some beautiful places to hike! You must be stubborn because I am so impressed that you are sticking with Project Every Day. I tried to do the #100dayproject over on Instagram and only made it to day nine. Hang in there!

It’s hard to do everything we want to do, isn’t it? So no apologies for not blogging, doing your Project Every Day, etc. Enjoy ALL that you can do, and tell us about it later. We’re excited for you and we’ll be here when you want to chat.

    • Vivien- I know you get the too busy to get it all done, but still wanting to DO IT ALL feeling. Thank you for your support. It means a lot to me. And good luck with ALL of your projects too.

Oh, the mom and baby moose are so cute.

Congrats on another successful exhibit, and I look forward to your McCarthy posts!

    • I know Debby. I love it when a momma decides to have her baby in the yard. It is a bit of a pain because you really have to watch out for the momma. You cannot get between her and her baby, but those baby moose are so cute!

  7. Congratulations to all of your sons!
Your SAQA auction quilt is awesome! It makes me happy just looking at it.

  8. Love the SAQA auction quilt. What a wrap – up for May. Seems to me that spending as much time as you can with those growing boys is the most important job of all. Congratulations on #1 & 3 graduation. Gosh those middle school years are full of fun. Isn’t it wonderful to have one son exploring music with the help of a great instructor. They will be grown before you know it! I miss my “mom days” in the bleachers at sporting events! Enjoy your cabin time!

  9. Thank you Mary! I hope you are enjoying your grandma time and summer too!
