I just finished teaching for seven days straight at the Quilt Surface Design Symposium also known as QSDS. QSDS is the place to meet, learn, and mingle with some of the best textile artists and students around. 

I took a redeye on Saturday evening to arrive Sunday morning. I spent the day feeling like I was walking around with a bucket on my head, but that is just the reality of red eye. If you have never taken a red eye and want to know what that feels like, you can by reading this blog post. It is a good one–almost lyrical.

The Symposium takes place on the campus of the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio. Studying art on at an art school is kind of perfect.

The week I was there—Monday June 4 through Sunday June 10—featured nine different workshops with five different instructors. I did a terrible job of documenting this gig, but I did manage to get a photo of all the instructors together. From left to right Deborah Griffing, Carla Murray Adams, me, Lori McCown,  and Rosalie Dace. I hope you will visit their websites and check out their amazing work.

I taught a five day version of Abstraction Through Color, Pattern, and Repetition. I know we all felt like we had jumped off a cliff at one point or other, but in the end we all managed to ground ourselves and enjoy a great final hour of sharing work.

I peddled my book and my wares at the mini-market on Tuesday.

The support staff for QSDS is amazing. I am kind of trying to get Diane Muse’s job. She does the morning announcements, is the IT person (alright so I can’t do that part), and in general keeps it all moving forward.

She also makes amazing silk screen t-shirts.

And baby bottoms. Hazel and Evie are each getting a pair.

I ended the week with a two day version of the workshop Making Prints Out of Solids.

I had some great students! She is still smiling after seven straight days!

One of my students shared the art of James Philips with me. How did I not know his work? 

And then I discovered William L. Hawkins and I got to return the favor and give him a new artist to think about. Powerful patterning.

In the meantime, I am home—Anchorage & McCarthy, Alaska—for THREE months. I am very much looking forward to being with my family and my sewing machines.
